2008 Vigil Honor Class Named
March 16, 2008 10:05 AM
Any member of the Order Of The Arrow registered in scouting and in good standing with their Lodge is eligible for recommendation for elevation to the Vigil Honor, provided that the individual has been a brotherhood member for a minimum of two years.
However, the Vigil Honor is a distinction worn proudly and more than just a handsomely decorated certificate. The Vigil Honor is the highest level an individual can receive in the Order Of The Arrow, and it is also the hardest to achieve. In no manner is tenure in scouting or the order reason to receive the Vigil Honor. It is an award in which written rules do not determine and individuals qualifications for, but rather what the actions that he or she performs. For this reason, each member is given careful consideration in the selection of Vigil Honor candidates.
Vigil Honor members have a strong tradition to
uphold. Like the eagle scout, Vigil Honor members
distinguish themselves from the crowd, and at all
times must conduct themselves in accordance with
the Scout Oath and Law and the high ideals of the
Order Of The Arrow. Their membership was not won by
their conscious endeavor, rather by their unselfish
leadership in service to the Scouting movement, the
Lodge, and individuals, whether they be other Order
Of The Arrow members or within the community. Its
continued success depends on the care with which
future members are selected and on the maintenance
by its members of the high ideals of service to
others for which the Vigil Honor has always been
known.
